Chinatown Lantern Festival
Vancouver Chinatown Lantern Festival is a vibrant cultural event celebrating tradition, community, and the artistry of lantern-making. Designed to attract a diverse audience, from individuals to families across Vancouver, the festival blends historical significance with a modern, engaging experience.
The visual identity of the festival embraces a bold and festive aesthetic, centered around a rich red and gold colour palette inspired by traditional Chinese symbolism. These colors represent good fortune, joy, and prosperity, setting the tone for an inviting and celebratory atmosphere. Key illustrative elements include hand-drawn dragons, representing strength and wisdom, and a custom festival logo featuring a lucky cat, a well-known symbol of good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture.
The branding extends across multiple touchpoints, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience. Designed materials include street banners, event handout cards, a stamp passport for festival activities, posters, social media graphics, and merchandise. The stamp passport encourages engagement by allowing attendees to collect stamps at various event locations, enhancing interaction and exploration. The merchandise, featuring the festival’s signature illustrations, serves as both a keepsake and a means of extending the festival’s presence beyond the event itself.

Throughout the project, the goal was to create a visual identity that feels both culturally respectful and contemporary, celebrating Chinatown’s rich history while making the festival appealing to modern audiences. A combination of clean layouts and intricate illustrations strikes a balance between tradition and playfulness, making the event visually distinctive and memorable. I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Procreate to develop this project.
The final result is a visually striking identity that not only celebrates the essence of the Vancouver Chinatown Lantern Festival but also enhances the attendee experience through thoughtful, immersive design.
